Dog, cat, Chicken Homemade food

I read the post on the Front Porch: Kristin Hoffman offers her help on making your own pet food! under date Apr. 30,2008 We have been feeding our dogs, cats and chickens so called people food since last Sept.2007. This is when work ended. Someone gave us their Y2K stock 200 + cans, the size #10. All dried foods. We only could get enough money for cow feed because she's milking. So I started cooking the food up. The animals love it, I got a lot more eggs this past winter. Our stock of #10 cans is about gone. Last month, we had a little extra money, so I bought a bag of dog food. The dogs would not eat, this lasted three days- then I gave them home made food again. All this took time to make - but I had time and no money. I am still making food for them and their all do wonderful. Is this right or not? Who knows. But it's working for us. They also get my extra milk, old milk, buttermilk, eggs (Cooked), and food when I clean out the ice box. Right now they love cooked rice and milk.
Food for thought:What did dogs and cats eat before pet food was made? And some canned pet food looks this beef stew, read the label.

You would be surprised at how much better the food you are cooking for your aniamls honestly is.. I was surprised at the information out there for homemade animal food.. Even Opra is getting on the band wagon of feeding her animals "human" food... Good job and what a great way to use up what someone gave you.. god bless glenda

We have 9 new chicks and 11 kittens this spring. Our garden is up and doing wonderful. I have already picked 5 gallon freezer bags full of strawberries(for ice cream topping and jam)and will have a second picking this fall. We are blessed.

A place to find out new ways to live and eat for less.

With the price of gas, food and loses of jobs and job lay offs: people have been asking me more often ," How do you do this or that?" So I'm starting this so I can point people here. I welcome any ideas on making it through this days we are in.
I by no means have all the answers. But we have lived on one income for more than ten years now. I have found new ways of doing things for less. And finding ways to use what I already have before trying to buy. Now I have to use even more creativity than before. My husband has prostate cancer, and our income has taken a big fall. But my store house is full, we are clothed and housed. We are very blessed.
Here are a few things we are doing : I only buy food on sale, I plan meals with what is in the house. I make even more things from scratch: ice cream ( our milk , cream, eggs and sugar from store), I'm in the process of making sanitary pads( they went up in price too, but I don't have to buy anything, just use what I already have around the house), I learned to can sharp cheddar cheese( when it goes on sale, I can buy a lot, We love cheese), I make mozzarella and ricotta from our cow's milk, I am now making our homemade Cheese Whiz and canning it in jars.

This is just a start. I am willing to help any one I can make it through this day and age( prices of everything up)

So please ask a way.

Together we will make it.

TIP for today: You can grow Bush green beans in a bucket, and get a lot of beans to can or freeze. And do not plant tomatoes near corn or potatoes.

I’m a homesteading, homeschooler, farm mom and wife. I’ve been married 10+ years, kids(his ,mine and ours is 9). We raise and grow 80%+ of what we eat. I enjoy : knitting, cooking from scratch, reading, blogging, canning, quilting, and more. My husband has prostate cancer in his bones. So I’m now learning all about that and new drugs. And would like to share with others what I know. I by no means know it all. We started living off the farm more then ten years ago. Tommy said I could stay home with the kids. What a blessing. But with only one income and 5 mouths to feed, well I start homesteading, farming, gardening, canning out of have too. Now I do it because it’s just much better food. The Lord has blessed us much over the years. We have only had the Internet for a few months, we have no cable etc. We do have power but we hang clothes out side, use the power very wisely, it’s going up in cost too.
Lately, a lot of my friends have ask me how to do this or that, how to store food, what to store. So I started blogging, they can come here.

Hi Becky, you do sound alot like us, thanks for stopping by my blog. My husband isn’t in the best of health either. Trying to make it all work can be a challenge. I’m new to blogging, and we just got our computer last year. While I am no stranger to computers, having one at home with internet access. I found your blog most helpful and I do agree with your husband. We are headed for some very hard times ahead. I would love to know how you heat your home and what part of the country that you live in? We may not have gas or electric heat in the future….and that is all I have. I really enjoyed visiting your web-page! I originally visited looking for a mozzarella cheese recipe. (Thanks for the links.) What really caught my attention was how self-suffiecient your family is. It reminded me of back home. (Louisville, KY.) I was lucky enough to live in town but our house was one of the first on the block (1946) and had a great garden in the back yard. Kale, pole beans, squash, tomatoe, carrots and TONS of blackberries. Boy do I miss that. I now live in Southern California. Talk about culture shock!! People here are soooo different. For example: I went to the grocery store about a month ago and bought a huge bundle of kale. (My brother and dad were coming for dinner.) When I go to check out, the “life-size” barbie at the register asks me, “What are you going to do with all this garnish?? Do you work as a caterer?” I laughed, paid for my groceries and politely told her that I was not a caterer, but that I was going home to garnish my STOMACHE!! She didn’t know it was food!! Thank goodness I finally found an awesome farmers market not too far away. Great people and great produce. Anyway… thanks for the awesome web-page and great hints. God bless you and your family.
